regarding the latest hype about swine flu, hk finally got its first confirmed case. but that's not the point of this post. and to save myself the time of putting what i think into word, i'll just copy and paste some of the comments readers left on CBCnews webbie:

"Nice to see that CBC is participating in spreading panic and fear a la CNN & Fox News.

Indeed, 331cases worldwide? Wow, let's all barricade ourselves in our own homes and seal any openings with duct tape while we line our walls with aluminum.

More elderly die from the common cold each year that this 'snoutbreak'."

"When the annual flu bug comes again this year and 2500 die in Canada and 30,000 die in the States and thousands more around the world, will the W.H.O. and govts. give the world an hourly blow by blow? I think not ! they never have. This was to justify their own existence, since we haven't heard from them in years."

"I still don't believe this is a pandemic. 331 cases out of 6.8 billion people is nothing to get so upset about. More people are catching the regular flu (which can kill you) than this "swine" flu. More people are dying in car crashes everyday than dying from this flu. Most people who have contracted the virus outside of Mexico have only mild cases and are recovering.

The one person who died of the flu in the US was a 2 year old Mexican girl who already had a compromised immune system, which is something this story and others have omitted. This is fear mongering at its best. Governments can change policies, change regimes, change the way we live because we're afraid, just look back at the Bush Administration's wild changes post 9/11.

In my opinion this is the media needing a good story, or it's the government needed to give the public a good dose of shock therapy. Read Naomi Klein's new book "The Shock Doctrine" if you need more information on how the gov't has done this type of thing time and time again, and we still don't learn from it."
